The location of a Ricky’s All Day Grill restaurant that burned down on Douglas Street at Burnside Road could be redeveloped into a multi-storey furniture showroom, according to plans filed with the City of Victoria.
An early morning fire engulfed the property at 2900 Douglas Street in June of 2023, with police subsequently identifying the incident as arson. The parcel was listed for sale following the incident, and the building razed.
Victoria-based Continuum Architecture on behalf of Standard Furniture has submitted an application to the City for a development permit with variance, seeking approvals for an approximately 18,400 square foot commercial building with showroom space and offices, across three levels. ‘Green’ components, as per the application, consist of multiple plantings and trees.
The flat-ironed and pitched shape of the proposal is described by the architects as a reflection of the “neighbourhood's materiality with metal cladding and concrete,” and one that will “accentuate the lot's triangular shape, presenting a striking sharp edge towards the intersection, which will be the highest part of the sloped structure.”

A reduction from the mandatory 46 parking spots to 16 is proposed by the applicant, citing nearby transit routes, and cycling infrastructure that will be built as part of the project.
The architects further state: “The new Standard Furniture store will be a valuable addition to the Burnside neighbourhood. Its thoughtful design, strong transportation connections, and green building features will contribute to the community's growth and development. We believe this project aligns with the city's vision for the area and respectfully request your support for our application.”
Operating in Victoria since 1912, Standard Furniture is presently located in Saanich along the 700-block of Cloverdale Avenue between Oak and Douglas streets.
